KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said on Monday (Jun 19) that people accusing government agencies of acting on political directives when conducting investigations should present evidence to back up their claims.
“Now, whenever any action is taken, it is politicised, which is dangerous.”
“If an allegation is made, demonstrate that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), or any other body is acting on political orders.” That can be raised,” Mr Anwar told Parliament’s Upper House.
He advised everyone to “look at the facts” to evaluate whether a probe is political in nature.
“Do not be surprised if, while in power, we use that power to award contracts to children, families, and cronies (while) amassing wealth for ourselves.”
“And, when the MACC investigates, don’t consider this a political accusation,” he added.
He went on to say that members of the Upper House should be optimistic in order to save Malaysia from the “scourge of rampant corruption.”
Mr Anwar was responding to senator Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai, who had requested him to explain how the MACC ensures that its investigations are not compromised by political power.
Separately, Malaysia’s prime minister stated that governance and government management are top priorities.
“This means empowering the MACC and preventing the leakage of extravagance and corruption, both of which are considered systemic in our country,” he explained.
