KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian government has announced that the RM20 (S$6.43) road charge (RC) levied on Singapore-registered cars entering the country between April 1 and April 7 will be waived.
Malaysia’s Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong said in a press statement on Monday (Mar 28) that the decision was made in light of the fact that the two countries’ land borders have been closed for more than two years, and Singaporeans have been unable to enter Malaysia to top up their Touch ‘n Go cards.
“There are cards that have expired within this time span,” Dr Wee explained.
“As such, I have talked with Johor’s chief minister, YAB Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi, and I have agreed to exclude RC payment levied on all Singapore-registered vehicles for seven days from April 1, 2022 to April 7, 2022,” he said.
Dr Wee said that the exception was made to avoid congestion at the two immigration checkpoints, Bangunan Sultan Iskandar at the Woodlands Causeway and Kompleks Sultan Abu Bakar at the Tuas Second Link.
He stated that congestion might occur because many travelers do not have enough money on their Touch ‘n Go cards or had cards that are no longer usable.
Dr. Wee also stated that visitors driving Singapore-registered vehicles must use the seven-day exemption to top up their physical Touch ‘n Go cards or register for Malaysia’s Vehicle Entry Permit scheme (VEP), in which a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag linked to an e-wallet Touch ‘n Go application is installed on the vehicles.
“Singapore-registered cars that have previously registered for and fitted the RFID VEP tags will likewise be free from RC payment for the same time,” he added, adding that RC costs will resume on April 8.
As Malaysia reopens to tourists, properly vaccinated travelers will be permitted to pass the land borders between Singapore and Malaysia without quarantine or COVID-19 swab testing from Friday.
All kinds of transportation, including private vehicles such as automobiles and motorbikes, will be available to travelers.
