THE HAGUE – At least two people were killed and several others were injured on Saturday when a cargo truck ran off a dike and plowed into a crowd of revelers, according to Dutch police.
Early Saturday evening, the Spanish-registered truck left the road on the narrow Zuidzijdsedijk, about 30 kilometers (18 miles) south of Rotterdam.
“The cargo truck crashed into a group of people while they were enjoying a neighborhood barbecue,” Rotterdam police said on Twitter.
“Several people have died, and several others have been taken to the hospital,” with some in critical condition, according to police.
According to a police officer on the scene, “at least two people were killed,” but police were still on the scene verifying exact numbers.
Photos from the scene identified the truck as belonging to the Spanish company El Mosca.
The truck’s driver, who was not injured, was arrested and taken into custody by police, according to the NOS national broadcaster.
The Dutch accident occurs just one day after a van driver plowed into a crowded cafe terrace in central Brussels, injuring six people.
