UK, France condemn Iran’s violent repression of legitimate peaceful protests

LONDON – The United Kingdom and France condemned Iran’s deadly repression of genuine nonviolent protests provoked by the death of Mahsa Amini on Friday.

Amini, who had been arrested by the morality police, died in detention on September 16.

During meetings in Paris, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna both denounced Tehran for supplying Russia with drones used to strike civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine in an indiscriminate manner.

They condemned Iran’s destabilizing efforts in and around the Middle East, particularly the transfer of unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles, and vowed to strengthen international cooperation to resist such activities.

The ministers repeated their firm belief that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon and expressed grave worry about its lack of cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency.

On Friday, the UK accused Iran of endangering the lives of UK-based journalists, following a crackdown in Iran that rights groups believe has killed more than 300 anti-regime protestors.

“I summoned the Iranian charge d’affaires today after Iranian journalists working in the UK faced immediate threats to their lives,” Cleverly said.
