MANILA — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed his sympathies to India on Saturday, following the Oct. 30 bridge collapse in the western state of Gujarat, which killed more than 130 people.

During the 19th ASEAN-India Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Marcos offered his condolences.

“Let me begin by expressing our sympathies on behalf of the Filipino people for the awful loss of life and injury caused by the bridge collapse that you recently experienced,” Marcos stated during his intervention address.

He expressed hope that those injured in the deadly incident would recover quickly.

“We pray that the injured will recover quickly,” he stated.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar led the Indian delegation at the ASEAN leaders’ summit.

On Oct. 30, a pedestrian suspension bridge in the Indian town of Morbi collapsed, killing at least 135 people, the majority of them were women, children, and the elderly.

According to authorities, the bridge collapsed due to overburden. According to reports, the event occurred just a week after the bridge was repaired.

The 754-foot Machchu river bridge was erected during British administration in the nineteenth century.
