Chief of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, Mazloum Abdi, reported on Twitter that six members of the Kurdish-led security force were murdered in a Daesh suicide strike on a security forces center in Raqqa, Syria, on Monday.
Farhad Shami, the chief of the SDF’s information department, reported that one suicide bomber was dead and another was taken into custody.
In 2014, Daesh overran large portions of Iraq and Syria, including the city of Raqqa, which served as its principal seat of power. However, after losing its final major swath of land in Syria in 2019, Daesh has turned to guerrilla warfare.
In recent years, most of the thousands of remaining militants have been hiding out in the rural backlands, but they are still capable of launching insurgent-style strikes.
About 500 people were killed in January when Daesh attacked the SDF-run Al-Sina’a jail in the northeastern Syrian city of Hasaka, the SDF reported. Among the deceased were 374 people with ties to Daesh and dozens of SDF fighters and prison officials.
