A security alarm forced the evacuation of three levels of the Eiffel Tower in central Paris on Saturday, France’s most iconic monument, which drew 6.2 million tourists last year.
The site’s operator, SETE, said bomb disposal experts and police were scouring the area, including a restaurant on one of the levels.
“It’s standard procedure in this type of situation, which is rare,” a spokesman said.
Visitors were evacuated from all three floors as well as the square beneath the monument just after 1:30 p.m.
The tower’s construction began in January 1887 and was completed on March 31, 1889. During the 1889 World’s Fair, it attracted two million visitors.
