Iranian foreign minister rejects interference in Lebanese presidential election

BEIRUT: Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, during a press conference in Beirut, stated that Lebanon’s presidential election is an internal matter, firmly rejecting foreign interference in the country’s internal affairs.

Amir-Abdollahian emphasized that Lebanon’s leaders possess the wisdom and competence required to elect a president. He urged external support for facilitating dialogue among Lebanese factions to ensure the election of a president and added that Iran continues to support Lebanon, including its army, people, and resistance.

Lebanon is approaching a full year without a president, facing political divisions and a severe economic crisis. The country’s parliament is divided between Hezbollah allies and opposition forces regarding the future presidency. Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri recently called on political forces to engage in dialogue and set a timeline of seven days followed by open sessions to elect a new president.

Despite multiple election sessions, none of the factions have been able to secure the necessary votes for their candidate to win. This situation has led to growing frustration among the Lebanese population, who are grappling with a range of challenges, including political, economic, and social turmoil.

Additionally, 110 judges in Lebanon have gone on strike, citing the state’s failure to cover their healthcare and educational expenses, as well as inadequate working conditions within the justice system. The economic crisis in the country has significantly impacted their salaries and benefits.

Overall, the situation in Lebanon remains complex and characterized by political gridlock, economic difficulties, and social unrest, with the election of a new president a critical step in addressing these challenges.
