Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has extended an invitation to Tesla CEO Elon Musk to consider establishing a Tesla manufacturing facility in Turkey, according to a post by the Anadolu Agency on a social media platform on Sunday. This request was made during a meeting between Erdogan and Musk, which took place at the Turkish House, a skyscraper situated near the United Nations headquarters in New York, as reported by the Turkish state-owned news agency.
In addition to this, Musk is scheduled to hold a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in California on the following Monday. Musk stated on the same social media platform that their discussions would center around advancements in artificial intelligence technology.
Erdogan’s visit to the United States is primarily for his participation in the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
Notably, Tesla had expressed interest in August regarding the construction of a factory in India, aimed at producing affordable electric vehicles (EVs). Currently, Tesla operates six factories and is in the process of building a seventh in Mexico, specifically in the northern state of Nuevo Leon, as part of its strategy to expand its global presence. Musk had mentioned back in May that the automaker would likely select a location for a new factory by the end of the year.
It’s worth mentioning that Tesla’s stock has experienced a remarkable 123 percent increase in value this year, and the company announced on a recent Saturday that it had successfully manufactured its 5 millionth vehicle.
As of the time of reporting, both Tesla and the Turkish embassy in Washington have not yet provided responses to requests for comments on this matter.
