CAIRO: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has officially announced his candidacy for a third term in the upcoming presidential election slated for December.
El-Sisi, a former military leader who assumed the presidency in 2014, had been widely anticipated to seek re-election for a third term, given the constitutional changes made four years ago, which extended his potential tenure until 2030.
In recent weeks, his supporters have launched a campaign featuring billboards and public messages encouraging El-Sisi to run again.
El-Sisi initially came to power following his pivotal role in the ousting of Muhammad Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, in 2013.
He subsequently won the presidential elections in 2014 and 2018, securing an overwhelming 97 percent of the vote on both occasions. This election occurs at a time when Egypt grapples with soaring inflation rates and a persistent shortage of foreign currency.
