The White House has advised caution in response to recent opinion polls that indicate Democratic President Joe Biden is trailing behind prominent Republican candidate Donald Trump. A poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena on Sunday revealed that Biden was behind Trump in five out of six crucial battleground states, despite a year remaining until the November 2024 presidential election.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that there would be numerous polls circulating, and she encouraged people to view them with some skepticism. She referred to previous instances, such as polls in 2012 that showed Republican Mitt Romney leading then-President Barack Obama, who ultimately won the election decisively. She also pointed to the 2022 midterm congressional elections, where Republicans had anticipated significant gains but achieved a more moderate outcome, with Democrats retaining Senate control and Republicans securing a narrow majority in the House of Representatives.
The Times poll specifically indicated that Biden was trailing Trump in Nevada, Georgia, Arizona, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, while leading Trump in Wisconsin. The results in these six states will play a crucial role in determining the outcome of the presidential election.
