Saudi calls to boycott TikTok mount as platform denies discrimination

  • Share

In London, there’s been an escalation in calls within Saudi Arabia to boycott TikTok. This surge follows the initiation of a campaign alleging that the video-sharing platform unfairly censors and prohibits Saudi accounts expressing favorable opinions about the Kingdom.

The boycott movement has gained traction amid growing concerns regarding TikTok’s purported manipulation of algorithms and perceived biased treatment, causing discontent among its Saudi user community.

Numerous users have sought out alternative social platforms to condemn TikTok’s alleged suppression of pro-Saudi content, using the trending hashtag #BoycottTiktok alongside messages encouraging Saudis to uninstall the app.

One user, @ayedarini, encouraged a boycott, asserting that the platform is waging a “war against us.”

The user further stated: “It’s evident that TikTok is singling out Saudi accounts, promoting content that opposes them and their nation. Boycotting it has become a responsibility for every Saudi.”

Another recent post from @X_Tiktok_, a dedicated profile advocating for banning the platform in the Kingdom, strongly criticized TikTok’s “unacceptable” and “abusive” conduct, vowing to persist in their campaign against the platform.

The post conveyed: “TikTok persists in its biased approach, violating its policies specifically concerning posts by Saudi users, particularly those related to the nation. Saudi Arabia is a clear boundary, and its people remain resolute in defending their country, religion, and leadership.”
