Some members of the Democratic Party are criticizing President Joe Biden for the recent joint US-British military action in Yemen. Biden, confirming the airstrikes as a “defensive action” against Yemeni Armed Forces’ operations targeting Israeli and Israeli-bound ships, mentioned support from Australia, Bahrain, Canada, and the Netherlands. He asserted a willingness to order further military measures if necessary.
Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib accused Biden of violating the Constitution’s Article I by conducting airstrikes in Yemen without congressional approval, citing public fatigue with prolonged conflicts.
Representative Mark Pocan emphasized the need for congressional authorization before the US becomes involved in another lengthy conflict, urging collaboration between the White House and Congress.
Congresswoman Sam Lee insisted that the President must seek Congress’s approval before initiating strikes, aligning with constitutional requirements, and highlighting public discontent with tax dollars funding prolonged wars.
Both Republican and Democratic members of Congress had previously expressed concerns about unauthorized US strikes in Yemen, with Democratic Congresswoman Val Hoyle emphasizing the Constitution’s clear mandate for congressional authorization before military involvement in overseas conflicts.
