KABUL – A Black Hawk helicopter commandeered by the Taliban following the chaotic US pullout from Afghanistan crashed during a training session over the weekend, killing two pilots and one crew member, according to the defense ministry.
The event occurred on the campus of the country’s defense institution in Kabul on Saturday.
According to the ministry, the Black Hawk crashed due to “a technical malfunction during a training exercise,” and five crew members were also injured.
When the US military left the country last year, it left behind billions of dollars in planes, vehicles, missiles, and other material, much of which it said had been rendered useless.
Former Afghan government forces also flew helicopters to Central Asian countries before the Taliban assumed complete control of the country.
The Taliban have managed to repair certain aircraft, notably helicopters, which are now believed to be piloted by former government forces pilots.
On the first anniversary of its restoration to power, the regime displayed a variety of equipment during a military parade on August 31.
