His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam met with Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina; witnessed the signing ceremony of memorandums of understanding (MoUs)
His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen accompanied His Majesty.
The arrival of His Majesty to the Prime Minister’s Office in Dhaka was welcomed by Bangladesh’s Prime Minister.
During the meeting, His Majesty and the Prime Minister discussed bilateral relations between Brunei and Bangladesh, as well as bilateral cooperation through the signing of three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in the domains of shipping, labor, and energy, as well as an agreement on air services.
The two presidents also discussed the exploration of new potential for collaboration between their respective countries.
Following the bilateral meeting, His Majesty and the Bangladeshi Prime Minister saw the signing of three Memorandums of Understanding and an agreement between His Majesty’s Government and the Government of Bangladesh.
They were an air services agreement (ASA), a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the employment and recruitment of Bangladeshi workers, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other petroleum products, and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the recognition of certificates issued under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, As Amended.
Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of Finance and Economy II Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew bin Abdullah signed on behalf of His Majesty’s Government for the ASA, while State Minister at the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism Md Mahbub Ali represented the Government of Bangladesh.
Under the terms of the MoU, Brunei and Bangladesh agree to establish and operate air services between the two countries, recognizing the importance of efficient and competitive services in enhancing economic growth, trade, tourism, investment, and consumer welfare, as well as the importance of the service as a means of creating and fostering relations.
The MoU on the employment and recruitment of Bangladeshi workers was signed by Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Ahmaddin bin Haji Abdul Rahman on behalf of the Government of His Majesty, while the Government of Bangladesh was represented by Minister of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Imran Ahmad.
The MoU’s goal is to establish an effective framework to oversee the employment and recruiting of employees from Bangladesh, as well as to ensure that the rights and obligations of both workers and employers are enforced in accordance with Brunei Darussalam’s laws and regulations.
In the case of the MoU on cooperation in the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and other petroleum products, Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew signed on behalf of the Government of His Majesty, while the Government of Bangladesh was represented by MP, State Minister of the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid.
The scope and concept for the MoU extension is for Brunei Energy Services and Trading (BEST) to identify opportunities to source LNG and other petroleum products such as LPG from third parties for supply to Bangladesh.
Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Mohd Amin Liew signed on behalf of the Government of His Majesty for the MoU on the Recognition of Certificates under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, As Amended, while State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury represented the Government of Bangladesh.
The MoU will recognize bilaterally the training requirements and certification issued by both parties, allowing seafarers from both countries to work onboard vessels flying the Brunei or Bangladeshi flags.
The Bangladeshi prime minister said His Majesty farewell before he left the Prime Minister’s Office.
Earlier in the day, His Majesty visited the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum and was received by Rehana Siddique, daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Father of the Nation of Bangladesh. After that, His Majesty was invited to lay a wreath and see the museum’s exhibits.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh’s founding father and president, used to live in the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum. On August 14, 1994, the home was dedicated as a museum.
