Daesh group claims Kabul blast that killed 4 people at Shiite enclave

In a claim made on its Telegram channel, the extremist group Daesh asserted responsibility for an explosion in the Afghan capital that resulted in the deaths of four individuals the previous night. The Sunni Muslim militant organization stated that they employed a parcel bomb placed by “IS fighters in a room frequented by Shiites.”

The incident took place in the Dasht-e-Barchi district of Kabul, an area predominantly inhabited by the historically oppressed Shiite Hazara community, according to the police. Kabul’s police spokesman, Khalid Zadran, informed reporters on Friday that an investigation into the explosion’s cause is ongoing. He also noted that the initial count of two fatalities and nine injuries had been updated to four deaths and seven injuries.

Daesh, which views Shiites as heretics, has carried out multiple lethal attacks in the same vicinity of Kabul in recent years, targeting institutions such as schools, mosques, and fitness centers. The frequency of bombings and suicide attacks has significantly decreased since the Taliban ceased their insurgency and assumed power in August 2021, displacing the US-backed government. Nevertheless, several armed groups, including the regional branch of Daesh, continue to pose a threat.
