French MPs slam ‘policy of war’ against Syrian Kurds

PARIS: On Saturday, a hundred French legislators, mostly from the left, condemned Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s “war policy” against Kurds in northern Syria.

While the rest of the world is focused on Ukraine, where Russia’s war crimes are multiplying, Erdogan is “planning an umpteenth murderous onslaught against the Kurds in northern Syria,” according to a statement published by the JDD organization.

According to a statement initiated by Communist senator Laurence Cohen, the Turkish president “is taking advantage” of Turkey’s pivotal status as a NATO member on good terms with both Moscow and Kiev “to obtain a blank cheque from the Atlantic Alliance in order to intensify his attacks in northern Syria.”

“Western countries must no longer turn a blind eye,” stated the elected officials, legislative deputies, and upper house senators, who were primarily from leftist and environmentalist groups. They were joined by members of President Emmanuel Macron’s ruling party and the rightwing Republicans.

They urged the West to “ensure the safety of Kurdish activists and organizations present on European soil.”

The signatories requested France to report the subject to the UN Security Council in order to “declare a no-fly zone in northern Syria and provide international protection to Syrian Kurds.”

They also asked for “international recognition” for the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria.

Erdogan has threatened to launch a new military attack against Kurdish-controlled parts of northern Syria, establishing a buffer zone 30 kilometers deep.
