BERLIN – A German lady was convicted on Tuesday of Daesh membership and other offenses after going to Syria with her young son to join the organization. She was sentenced to three and a half years in prison.

Verena M., whose full name was not disclosed due to German privacy laws, was convicted of membership in a foreign terrorist organization and kidnapping of a juvenile, among other offenses, according to the Duesseldorf state court.

The court determined that the defendant flew to Syria with her 5-year-old son in 2015 without the knowledge of the child’s father. It was discovered that she administered the family and raised her son in accordance with Daesh doctrine, while her new husband fought for the group, and that the couple owned two Kalashnikov firearms.

Judges determined that the child was fortunate to have survived two bombing attacks while with Daesh. In 2019, the defendant surrendered to Kurdish forces. In October of last year, she and her three children — two of whom were born in Syria — were repatriated to Germany.

This is one of several cases in Germany involving women who traveled to Daesh-controlled territory. A German lady who took her young daughter to Syria and allegedly took advantage of an enslaved Yazidi woman was sentenced to three years and three months in prison last month.
