Iran holds military drill near strategic Strait of Hormuz

DUBAI: Iran’s military began its annual drill on Friday in the coastal area of the Gulf of Oman and near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, according to state TV, even as authorities continue to crack down on anti-government protests that have been ongoing for more than three months.

The strait, which is located at the mouth of the Arabian Gulf, is critical to global energy supplies, as it transports roughly one-fifth of all oil traded at sea.

According to the TV report, commandos and airborne infantry would take part in the “Zolfaghar-1401” wargames, along with drones, fighter jets, helicopters, military transport aircraft, and submarines. Iran’s military will also launch missiles and deploy air defense systems, according to the report.

The exercises are intended to “improve readiness in confronting foreign threats and any possible invasion,” according to the TV.

Iran conducts such drills on a regular basis to improve its defensive capabilities and test weapons.

Iran has been rocked by anti-government protests since mid-September. The death of a woman detained by the country’s morality police sparked them. The protests quickly turned into calls to end the country’s clerical rule, which had lasted more than four decades.
