BERLIN – Authorities in Germany stated on Sunday that they had arrested an Iranian national on suspicion of plotting a chemical terror strike.

The 32-year-old man was apprehended when special police forces assaulted his home in the western city of Castrop-Rauxel.

“The accused is suspected of preparing a major act of violence,” the prosecutors’ office in Dusseldorf said in a news release, adding that he bought deadly chemicals like ricin and cyanide in order to carry out a religiously motivated attack.

Police officers and specialists dressed in protective gear inspected the suspect’s residence for evidence.

“The hunt is for corresponding poisons and other evidence. The accused and one other person have been arrested, and evidence has been secured and is being analyzed, according to the prosecutors’ office.

According to Bild, the police operation was carried out after a tip from a friendly country’s intelligence service.
