DAMASCUS: Israel carried out air attacks near Damascus, injuring two Syrian soldiers, according to Syria’s state news agency SANA early Wednesday.
“Around 00:25 a.m., the Israeli enemy launched an air assault with missile bursts from the north of the occupied Syrian Golan, targeting specific positions near Damascus,” SANA reported, citing a military source.
“The aggression wounded two soldiers and caused material damage,” the outlet reported, adding that the majority of the missiles were intercepted by Syrian air defence systems.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the strikes targeted military sites near the airport in Dimas as well as the Beirut-Damascus highway west of the capital, where elite soldiers of the Syrian army are stationed.
According to the non-governmental organisation, which has a large network of informants in the war-torn country, the raids also targeted warehouses connected to the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militant group.
According to the Observatory, this was the 20th Israeli raid this year.
According to SANA, Israel conducted out air strikes near the government-held city of Homs earlier this month.
During Syria’s more than a decade-long civil conflict, Israel has launched hundreds of airstrikes on its territory, largely targeting Iranian-backed troops and Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, as well as Syrian army sites.
While Israel rarely remarks on its operations in Syria, it has consistently stated that it will not allow its archfoe Iran to grow its presence there.
