Kambosos is Philippines-bound ahead of Devin Haney rematch

MELBOURNE: Australian boxer George Kambosos will spend the majority of his preparation for a world title rematch against Devin Haney in the Philippines, where he once sparred with Manny Pacquiao.

Kambosos and Haney will return to the ring on Oct. 16 at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. The 23-year-old American won a unanimous decision in their June fight and took Kambosos’ three belts to become the undisputed world champion.

Between 2017 and 2019, Kambosos spent the majority of his time in the Philippines working out with Pacquiao, who won 12 world titles across eight weight classes.

Haney enters the fight in October with a 28-0 record and 15 knockouts. Kambosos (20-1, 10 KOs) invoked the original contract’s rematch clause.

Kambosos stated that he wished to keep details of his preparation private, but that he intended to be “unreachable and out of sight” and would not return to Australia until 10 days before the fight.

He claimed to have felt the effects of his promotional efforts leading up to the June fight.

“I wanted it that big, and I was interested in it, but I needed to promote the fight,” Kambosos explained. “I was run to the ground with so many commitments the last time, but I feel fresh (now), and when I get away, I’ll be out of sight and out of reach.”
