DUBAI: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has disclosed the outcomes of the initial round of voting covering all 24 categories for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards. Among the longlisted entries for Outstanding British Film is “The Old Oak,” a Syrian refugee drama directed by veteran filmmaker Ken Loach.
Penned by Paul Laverty, the film narrates the story of TJ, a pub landlord who forms a bond with Yara, a Syrian refugee settled in a small town in the north-east of England. It delves into the complexities that emerge when refugees, including Yara’s family, become part of this close-knit community.
Starring Dave Turner, Elba Mari, Trevor Fox, and Joe Armstrong, “The Old Oak” stands as a collaborative production involving the UK, France, and Belgium.
The official BAFTA nominations are set to be unveiled on Jan. 18, with the awards ceremony scheduled for Feb. 18 in London.
