King’s estranged sons say they hope to return soon after surprise Thailand visit fuels speculation

Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s two estranged sons said Monday they planned to return to the country soon following an unexpected visit that fuelled suspicion among many in the kingdom.

The brothers’ surprise journey to their hometown was their first in 27 years, yet the Royal Palace has not provided any official information or public remark on their visit.

“This week has flown by. There are many things I want to do and accomplish, but I only have so much time. Everyone I’ve met in Thailand has been friendly since I returned this time. “I’ve met several Thais and had the opportunity to speak with them closely,” said Vacharaesorn Vivacharawongse, the King’s second oldest son, from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Returning to Thailand after such a lengthy absence had filled “holes in my heart,” he explained.

“This is such a great feeling,” Vacharaesorn exclaimed.

Their reappearance piqued the imagination of many in the kingdom, fueling rumors that the sons may be officially welcomed back into the royal family after nearly three decades apart.

Thais have speculated about the purpose for their visit on social media, despite a harsh lese majeste law that imposes heavy jail sentences for any perceived criticism of the royal family and makes any candid conversation about their position illegal.

Vacharaesorn, 42, arrived in Thailand last week and visited a daycare center for disadvantaged children as well as a Buddhist temple in Bangkok.

His brother Chakriwat Vivacharawongse, the King’s third son, came several days later and the two paid their respects to a picture of their late grandfather and to their great-grandfather, Prince Mahidol, who is regarded as the father of modern medicine in Thailand.
