TRIPOLI: Libya’s Public Prosecution has issued an arrest order for numerous officials in connection with the catastrophic flash flood that struck the Libyan port city of Derna two weeks ago, resulting in the deaths of thousands.
In an official statement, the Public Prosecutor’s Office announced its decision to detain 16 individuals who held positions of responsibility for managing the nation’s dam facilities, along with six officials from the Water Resources Authority, and the mayor of Derna. This action was taken due to their alleged failure to fulfill their obligations in managing the allocated funds for the city’s reconstruction and development.
The confirmed death toll continues to rise, surpassing 3,800 individuals as of last Saturday, as a result of the flash flood that breached two aging dams upstream from Derna. On September 10, a torrent of water swept through the region, carrying away thousands of people.
According to the statement, preliminary interrogations have been completed, and it has been recommended that those responsible be placed in pre-trial detention. Additionally, the statement calls for further investigations into others deemed responsible for the Derna flood incident.
