Mitrovic: I don’t think I’ve played a better derby

Aleksandar Mitrovic, the standout performer with two goals, commended the Al-Hilal supporters for creating an electrifying atmosphere during the 3-0 triumph against Al-Nassr in the Riyadh derby, a significant victory over title contenders.

Mitrovic secured a late brace for Al-Hilal, complementing Sergej Milinkovic-Savic’s opening goal, resulting in a decisive win for Luis Castro’s team at the King Fahd Stadium. This victory has extended their lead at the summit of the Saudi Pro League, now standing at a comfortable seven points.

The Serbian striker, who previously participated in prominent derbies such as the West London derby for Fulham, Tyne-Wear derby for Newcastle, and Belgrade derby for Partizan, asserted that Friday’s clash between Riyadh rivals Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr stood out among them all.

“[It was] amazing, really amazing,” Mitrovic expressed post-match. “I’ve played derbies in many countries but for sure this is not the best, for sure top, top of the list.

“The pressure before the game, the build-up with fans before the game, really, really amazing, something special. To be honest, I don’t think I ever played a better derby.”

Mitrovic has rapidly garnered adoration among Al-Hilal supporters, largely due to his remarkable tally of 20 goals in 20 appearances across all competitions for the Riyadh-based powerhouse. His two goals against Al-Nassr further solidified his rapport with the fans.

“I’m fortunate that wherever I play, I always have a strong relationship, but with these fans, it’s amazing,” Mitrovic acknowledged. “Since the day I arrived, even before I came here, there was speculation, and I received so many messages and support.

“And from the moment I arrived, we established a special connection. They make me happy, and I hope to continue making them happy. It’s a joyful relationship.”

Despite opportunities for both sides during the game, it was the league leaders who exhibited greater ruthlessness in front of goal, particularly in capitalizing on their chances late in the match.

“It was a very open game,” Mitrovic remarked. “From the start of the first half, we were superior, dominating the game; we had around three or four clear chances to score, but we couldn’t. We were aware that they possess quality and a wealth of experience.

“We understood that if we wanted to secure the win, maintaining a clean sheet was essential. I believe we scored the first goal at the right time, and collectively, we defended remarkably well.

“With the second goal, we sealed the game, and the third goal further solidified our lead. With a bit of luck, I could have even scored a hat-trick today. Nonetheless, overall, it was an exceptional performance, a tremendous game from us, securing a significant victory for our team and our supporters.”
