Jakarta, Indonesia – The growth of the nation’s democracy will be dependent on women’s participation and involvement, said Rahmat Bagja, head of the General Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), here on Tuesday.

“The progress and right path of the nation’s democracy rests not only on the shoulders of men, but also on the shoulders of women,” he said here on Tuesday.

Women, according to Bagja, will play a significant and determining role in determining the fate of Indonesia and the future generation.

He stated that if women face difficulties, it can have an impact on the following generation’s growth and development.

“If voters elect the wrong leader, the country’s attitude toward women will deteriorate. (For example, in the focus on women’s issues such as how many pregnant mothers die while giving birth, “He elaborated.

He went on to discuss the connection between women and elections.

“The election is about fighting for causes, fighting for visions, fighting for missions going forward, and the leaders for (paying) attention to (the challenges faced by) women,” Bagja explained.

Indeed, he stated that if voters, including women voters, make the incorrect choices, the country may suffer challenges.

Women, he believes, have an important part in all facets of a nation’s democratic life.

As a result, he underlined the importance of women in election administration, whether as supervisors, organizers, voters, or candidates, in maintaining democracy.

Bawaslu hosted the “National Consolidation of Women General Elections Supervisors” on Tuesday in an effort to increase women’s engagement in electoral supervision. Women’s participation in election monitoring is seen to have an impact on democratic growth and concerns affecting women and children.

Bawaslu also asked the government, election organizers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and society to collaborate in order to achieve women’s participation in election administration.

Bintang Puspayoga, Minister of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, had emphasized the importance of diverse party support in encouraging women’s involvement in politics, particularly in the 2024 legislative elections.
