RI strongly criticizes India’s ruling BJP staffs’ insult against Prophet

Jakarta – The Indonesian government has strongly condemned the disrespectful remarks made by two BJP spokespersons against the Prophet Muhammad.

The Indonesian Foreign Ministry tweeted on Tuesday, “This message has been sent to the Indian Ambassador in Jakarta.”

After making disparaging remarks against the Prophet Muhammad, the BJP suspended its national spokesperson, Nupur Sharma, and removed its Delhi media head, Naveen Kumar Jindal, on Sunday.

Sharma is accused of insulting the Prophet and his wife Aisha during a TV debate last week. Following the backlash over the debate’s statements, Sharma’s colleague, Jindal, is said to have tweeted a now-deleted tweet against the Prophet, which also enraged many, Aljazeera reported on Monday. The words have been blamed for confrontations in an Indian state, and there have been calls in India for the spokeswoman’s arrest.

Several Arab and Muslim-majority countries condemned the remarks and summoned Indian diplomats in their respective countries to express their outrage.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) strongly condemned the attack.

“The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation expresses its strong condemnation and denunciation of the recent insults issued by an official in the ruling party in India towards the Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be Upon Him,” the 57-member state organization noted in a statement as quoted by Aljazeera.

The incident has enraged Arab social media users, who have called for a boycott of Indian products, condemned the growth of hostility toward Islam and Muslims, and accused India of following in the footsteps of France and China in promoting Islamophobia, according to Aljazeera.
