September 8 set as annual day to honour Vietnamese language

HÀ NỘI — According to a decision signed by Deputy Prime Minister Phm Minh Chnh, September 8 would become an annual day to honor the Vietnamese language among the abroad Vietnamese community in 2023-30.

The project’s goal is to raise community awareness of the Vietnamese language’s beauty and value, while also honoring individuals and organizations that make positive contributions to expanding the language’s coverage within the community, keeping it as a language for communication among Vietnamese families abroad, and spreading it to foreigners.

It is hoped that it will improve the quality of Vietnamese teaching and learning in the community while also encouraging host authorities to bring Vietnamese into educational facilities in Vietnamese communities.

The project will strengthen Vietnamese studies and research, helping to make the language official alongside others in locations with favorable conditions.

The initiative will run concurrently with the Prime Minister’s cultural diplomacy policy until 2030, which was approved on November 30, 2021.

Throughout the year, activities to commemorate the day will be held and will be interwoven into festivals and other occasions.

They include an annual meeting to commemorate the day, a yearly contest to investigate the language and the awarding of the title of “Vietnamese language ambassador abroad,” and art performances at home and abroad to honor the Vietnamese language.

Individuals, organizations, families, and associations who have made significant contributions to the preservation and spread of the Vietnamese language within the Vietnamese community overseas will also be recognized.

Under the direction of the Vietnam National University in Hà Ni, an online platform for Vietnamese language training for overseas Vietnamese will also be launched.
