South Korea floods, landslides kill 7 as evacuation ordered

Seven people were killed, three were missing, seven were injured, and thousands were evacuated in South Korea on Saturday, according to officials, as a third day of severe rains prompted landslides and a dam overflow.

According to the Ministry of Interior and Safety, 1,567 individuals have been evacuated nationally as of 11 a.m. (0200 GMT), and the number could climb if water overflowed the dam in North Chungcheong province.

According to provincial authorities, evacuation orders issued by local governments encompassed more than 7,000 persons at various occasions.

More than 2,700 tonnes of water per second were rushing into Goesan Dam as of 9 a.m., the highest it can discharge.

Korea Railroad Corp. stated it was suspending all slow trains and some bullet trains, and that other bullet trains may be delayed owing to slower operation, due to landslides, track flooding, and falling boulders.

According to the transport ministry, a slow train derailed late Friday after a landslip pushed mud and sand across rails in North Chungcheong province. The engineer was hurt, but there were no passengers on board.

In a meeting with government agencies on Saturday, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo urged the military to aggressively participate in rescue efforts, collaborating with civilian authorities to mobilise equipment and manpower.
