ANKARA – Despite signing an agreement last month to suspend Ankara’s veto on NATO membership, Sweden has yet to extradite suspects sought by Turkey on terrorism-related charges, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday.
In reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Sweden and Finland requested for NATO membership, but were met with opposition from Turkey, which accused the Nordic nations of putting arms embargoes on Ankara and supporting terrorist organizations.
The three countries agreed to waive Ankara’s veto in exchange for counter-terrorism commitments, but Turkey has threatened to obstruct their membership aspirations if the pledges are not met. It has requested the extradition of 73 Swedish citizens as well as a dozen Finns.
