KYIV – Ukraine claimed Friday that it had shot down a full barrage of 13 cruise missiles fired by Russian forces overnight at an airbase in the country’s west.
“On June 23, thirteen of the occupiers’ cruise missiles were destroyed… The strike this time was directed at a military base in the Khmelnytskyi region, according to the Ukrainian air force on social media.
Over the winter, Russia unleashed waves of aerial attacks using cruise missiles and attack drones, forcing Kiev to call on its Western allies to strengthen its air defence systems.
“The launches were carried out from the Caspian Sea around midnight by four Tu-95MS bombers,” the air force stated in a statement.
Oleksandr Symchyshyn, the mayor of Khmelnytskyi, reported explosions in the town with a pre-war population of roughly 275,000 and hailed Ukrainian air defence systems.
Ukraine also stated that a Russian spy drone was shot down overnight.
