NATO, EU chiefs hold talk on war in Ukraine

BRUXELLES – NATO and EU leaders met on Monday to discuss the Ukraine conflict and the preparations for a new military cooperation agreement.

Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary-General of NATO, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, met in Brussels.

“We discussed Russia’s aggressiveness and increasing up assistance for Ukraine,” von der Leyen and Stoltenberg stated after their meeting on Twitter.

They emphasized that the “moment has come to agree on a new Joint Declaration to carry our partnership ahead,” because NATO-EU cooperation “contributes to security and stability.”

Russia’s war in Ukraine, as well as the EU’s current determination to increase its defense capabilities, have necessitated a reassessment of NATO-EU relations following the latest NATO-EU Joint Declaration.

The agreement, signed in 2018, focused on military mobility, counter-terrorism, and building resilience to chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats.
