Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has revealed that Kharkiv, one of Ukraine’s largest cities, is the primary target in Russia’s aggressive plan. This statement marks the first explicit confirmation from a senior Russian official regarding a specific target in their expansion efforts.

According to a report by Business Insider on Saturday (20/4/2024), Lavrov stated that Kharkiv plays a crucial role in President Vladimir Putin’s strategy. The plan involves establishing a demilitarized sanitation zone or buffer zone to protect Russia’s borders from potential Ukrainian attacks.

Moscow believes that the only way to defend Russian territory is by implementing buffer zones. This was explained by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov in March, who stated that such measures are necessary to keep settlements out of reach from enemy attacks.

Attacks on Kharkiv have escalated in recent weeks, with Russia employing various types of attacks, including missiles, guided bombs, and drones. These attacks are believed to be aimed at cutting off the city’s supplies and forcing civilian evacuations.

Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi has affirmed that his forces are prepared to face the threat of an attack on Kharkiv. He explained that steps have been taken to counter Russia’s aggressive plans against the city.

The situation in Kharkiv is becoming increasingly tense amid escalating conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The international community continues to monitor developments while urging for a peaceful resolution to prevent further bloodshed in the region.
