The International Relations Study Program (HI) of the National University held a national seminar entitled “Criticizing Indonesia’s Foreign Policy Journey in 2022”. The activity was held on Thursday (22/12/2022) in Hall Block 1, 4th Floor of the National University.

The activity was filled by HI thinkers, including Dr. Asep Kamaluddin Nashir S.Ag.,M.Si from the Indonesian International Relations Association (AIHII), Dr. Indra Kusumawardhana, S.Hum.,M.Hub.Int from the Regional Coordinator (AIHII), Dr. Aos Yuli Firdaus, S.IP., M.Si Deputy Dean of FISIP UNAS, Dr. Irma Indrayani, S.IP., M.Si Head of HI UNAS Study Program and Dr. Hendra Maujana Saragih, S.IP., M.Si Secretary of HI UNAS Study Program.

The seminar began with a presentation by the Indonesian International Relations Association (AIHII) Dr. Asep Kamaluddin Nashir S.Ag., M.Si, who provides an overview of the dynamics that occur in the world, which can have an impact on Indonesia. Among them are defense issues from Indonesia’s leadership in the G20 forum, AUKUS (Australia, United Kingdom, United States), Russia-Ukraine conflict, Indo-Pacific regional developments and Papua integration.

Indonesia remains consistent in maintaining the principle of free foreign policy – active on these issues. “Indonesia, which basically adheres to the principle of free and active politics, if it does not flinch at all in the midst of a global political vortex that can affect Indonesia’s existence,” he said.

The presentation was continued by the Deputy Dean of FISIP UNAS Dr. Aos Yuli Firdaus, S.IP., M.Si. Aos explained that Indonesia’s diplomacy journey in 2022 is very dynamic. “Indonesia will continue to work in diplomacy in any situation. Focus is still given to support the recovery process for both health and economic and other fields,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of HI UNAS Study Program, Dr. Irma Indrayani, S.IP., M.Si said that international political economy problems for Indonesia can be viewed from ATHG (Threats, Challenges, Obstacles and Disturbances). Various kinds of challenges for Indonesia, one of which is Indonesia’s preparation in achieving its vision in 2045.

“The strength of Indonesia’s political economy can be supported by young people who will take part. This challenge should be the focus of the government in building a strong Indonesian political economy,” he said.

On the other hand, in his disquization, the Secretary of the HI UNAS Study Program, Dr. Hendra Maujana Saragih, S.IP., M.Si questioned Indonesia’s firmness on its foreign policy. He stated that the implementation of the G20 which was carried out in November was not fully optimal.

“Indonesia did not make a very big profit from the implementation. It should also be able to be actively involved in several issues such as Palestinian independence and the turbulent sovereignty issues in the South China Sea region,” he concluded.

In the final session of the discussion, AIHII Regional Coordinator, Dr. Indra Kusumawardhana, S.Hum., M.Hub.Int expressed disappointment from academics regarding the policy change from Jokowi’s first period to his second period.

“President Jokowi, who in his first term strongly promoted the world’s maritime axis policy, suddenly changed to eliminate the term maritime in his policy. This has left us academics focused on maritime policy disappointed by the changes. Because, a great nation is a nation that has an identity. And Indonesia is a country that is a maritime country that can become its identity,” he said.

On the same occasion, the Deputy Dean of FISIP UNAS Dr. Aos Yuli Firdaus, S.IP., M.Si hopes that this activity will have a positive impact on the development of the National University. “In addition, the results of the discussions are expected to also provide recommendations for the government in the future”.
