DPR fractions reiterate support to proportional representation

Jakarta – The House of Representatives’ (DPR) political party factions issued an united statement reiterating their support for an open-list proportional representation system in legislative elections prescribed by electoral law.

The Golkar Party, Gerindra Party, NasDem Party, National Awakening Party (PKB), Democratic Party, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), National Mandate Party (PAN), and United Development Party are among the parliamentary party fractions that signed the unified declaration (PPP).

Meanwhile, Achmad Baidlowi, secretary of the United Development Party parliamentary fraction, acknowledged that representatives of parliamentary party fractions had signed the joint statement.

Baidlowi, on the other hand, stated that he would follow any judgment made by the Constitutional Court (MK) about the judicial review that could alter the present open-list proportional system to the closed-list system.

“We will follow whatever decision the MK makes later,” the fraction secretary stated.

The joint statement has three points, the first of which reiterates the signatories’ commitment to maintaining and advancing Indonesia’s democracy.

Signatories then requested the MK to uphold MK Decision No. 22-24/PUU-VI/2008, issued on December 23, 2008, by retaining Article 168, section (2) of the Election Law, which mandates the open-list proportional representation system in elections, to ensure Indonesia’s democratic advancement.

Signatories also asked the General Elections Commission (KPU) to carry out their duties in accordance with legal principles, to maintain institutional independence, and to act in the best interests of the people and the nation.

The joint statement was signed by 14 leaders of parliamentary party factions, as well as heads and deputy chairs of parliamentary commissions.

Party fraction signatories include Kahar Muzakir (Golkar), Ahmad Muzani and Desmond J. Mahesa (Gerindra), Robert Rouw and Saan Mustopa (NasDem), Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal (PKB), Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono and Marwan Cik Hasan (Democrat), Jazuli Juwaini (PKS), Saleh Partaonan Daulay (PAN (PPP).

Furthermore, Ahmad Doli Kurnia Tanjung, chair of the DPR RI Commission II, and Yanuar Prihatin and Syamsurizal, deputy chairmen of Commission II, are signatories.
