Jakarta – On Friday, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) opened Poso Energy’s 515-MW hydroelectric power plant (HPP) in Poso, Central Sulawesi, and Malea Energy’s 90-MW HPP in Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi.
According to Jokowi, the existence of HPPs would aid in the energy transition from fossil fuels to new renewable energy.
“We know that the world has urged, invited, and supported all nations to conduct an energy transition from fossil fuels to green energy,” said the president in Poso District, Central Sulawesi.
Jokowi noted that transitioning from fossil energy, such as coal, to green energy would be difficult, as Indonesia had previously relied on multiple coal-fired power plants to supply its electricity.
As a result, the president praised industry players Poso Energy and Malea Energy for their contributions to the construction of the two new green energy-based power plants.
“Once again, I applaud the Kalla Group for constructing a hydroelectric power plant in Central Sulawesi, which will also be finished in Mamuju (West Sulawesi) and Kerinci (western Sumatra),” Jokowi said.
The president stressed the importance of continuing the shift to clean energy. Meanwhile, Indonesia has already promised to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 29 percent by 2030 compared to a business-as-usual baseline scenario, with the goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2060.
“These goals are difficult to achieve since they require striking a balance between demand growth and electricity generation. There should not be an excess of electricity supply that burdens PT PLN (the state power company),” Jokowi said.
Former 10th and 12th vice presidents Jusuf Kalla, SOEs Minister Erick Thohir, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Arifin Tasrif, State Secretary Minister Pratikno, and Central Sulawesi Governor Rusdy Mastura were among those present during the introduction of Poso Energy and Malea Energy HPPs.
