Peter Anthony’s appeal against conviction, sentence to be heard on Jan 27 next year

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 Ogos — Mahkamah Sesyen di sini hari ini membenarkan permohonan bekas Menteri Pembangunan Infrastruktur Sabah, Datuk Peter Anthony bagi menggantung hukuman dan sabitan salah terhadapnya atas kesalahan menggunakan dokumen palsu.

Hakim Azura Alwi membuat keputusan itu selepas mempertimbangkan afidavit, hujahan bertulis dan hujahan lisan yang dikemukakan pihak pembelaan dan pendakwaan pada prosiding sebelum ini.

Pada 26 Mei lepas, Azura menjatuhkan hukuman penjara tiga tahun dan denda RM50,000 atau penjara 15 bulan terhadap Peter selepas didapati bersalah memalsukan surat berhubung kontrak kerja penyelenggaraan dan perkhidmatan sistem Sistem Mekanikal dan Elektrik (M&E) di Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) pada 2014.

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court here has scheduled a hearing on former Sabah Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony’s appeal to overturn his conviction and three-year jail sentence, as well as an RM50,000 fine, for using forged documents on January 27, next year.

S. Devanandan, Peter’s counsel, stated that the date was established by assistant registrar Nurul Ain Hamzah during today’s case management, which was attended by deputy public prosecutor Haresh Prakash Somiah.

“The appeal hearing will take place physically at 9 a.m. in front of High Court judge Justice Colin Lawrence Sequerah, and both the defense and prosecution are requested to provide written comments by or before January 13, 2023,” he stated when reached.

Meanwhile, the prosecution’s appeal against Sessions Court judge Azura Alwi’s granting of Peter’s plea to delay his sentence and conviction will be considered by High Court judge Justice Mohamed Zaini Mazlan this Wednesday (Nov 16).

After being found guilty of forging a letter relating to a service and maintenance contract in 2014, Azura sentenced Peter to three years in prison and fined him RM50,000 or 15 months in jail on May 26.
