BAGHDAD: A gas tanker exploded in Baghdad on Saturday night, killing at least nine people and injured 13, according to security officials. The explosion was an accident, they claimed.
“Nine individuals were killed and 13 were injured” when the tanker detonated, according to Ahmad Salim, the chief of security forces in Baghdad.
“The explosion was an accident, not a terrorist attack,” he stressed.
According to AFP, 12 people were slain. Another medical source previously told AFP that “eight people were killed and twenty were injured.”
The explosion, audible throughout most of Iraq’s capital, occurred at a car park beside a football field in an eastern Baghdad residential area.
According to an AFP correspondent, surrounding building windows were blasted out, and vehicles in the neighborhood were damaged.
