SINGAPORE: President Halimah Yacob declared on Monday (May 29) that she will not seek for a second term in this year’s election.

“The Presidential Election will be place in a few months. I have chosen not to run for re-election after considerable contemplation.

“It has been a great honor and privilege to serve as Singapore’s eighth President for the past six years.” “The experience has been both inspiring and humbling,” she added in a statement.

When she took office in 2017, she was aware of the “tremendous responsibilities” of the presidency, according to the 68-year-old. Her term expires on September 13 of this year.

“I have done my utmost to meet them. My goal was to contribute to the development of a more caring and compassionate society. I’m pleased I wasn’t alone on this adventure. Many Singaporeans supported me because they shared my convictions.

“By working together, we strengthened our communities’ voices and lifted those in need, particularly the disadvantaged and vulnerable among us.”

According to Madam Halimah, the presidency is the highest position in Singapore and a fundamental institution in the country’s democracy.
