Local media said that South Korea strongly criticized North Korea on Tuesday for launching a ballistic missile and threatened further penalties against Pyongyang.
Yonhap News Agency reports that President Yoon Suk-yeol, after chairing a National Security Council (NSC) meeting, issued a statement calling North Korea’s actions a breach of resolutions passed by the United Nations Security Council.
North Korea’s missile launch “was in flagrant violation of UN Security Council resolutions and a severe provocation threatening the peace on the Korean Peninsula, in Northeast Asia, and beyond,” the agency reported.
North Korea “appears to have flown over Japan” for the seventh time in a week, prompting a National Security Council meeting.
The Japanese Ministry of Defense earlier issued a statement warning the public to take cover, as North Korea had launched what seemed to be a ballistic missile that could head for the northern Japanese prefectures of Aomori and Hokkaido.
The Ministry of Defense later said that the missile had been destroyed.
Yoon Suk-yeol, the president, declared that Pyongyang had disregarded the decisions of the UN Security Council and called for severe punishment.
According to the story, Yoon also told his security officers to communicate with the US and Japan very away, saying that doing so would boost cooperation between Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo.
“Such irresponsible nuclear provocations will be faced with a strong response from our military and our allies, as well as the international community,” Yoon declared on October 1 for Armed Forces Day.
This past Saturday, North Korea also launched two short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea.
The recent increase of tensions between North and South Korea, the United States, and Japan in the East Sea is widely seen to be a direct response to this joint military exercise.
During a daylong visit to South Korea on Thursday, US Vice President Kamala Harris vowed that the United States will do “all” in its power to keep its security pledge to its Asian partner.
North Korea also launched two short-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea on Wednesday, a day before her visit.
With the enactment of this law, North Korea officially became a nuclear weapons state, giving its military the green light to deploy nuclear weapons in response to any strike using nuclear or other weapons of mass devastation.
In 2020, North Korea assaulted and destroyed the inter-Korean liaison office on the border, greatly increasing tensions on the peninsula. If Pyongyang “further escalates the situation,” Seoul has promised a harsh response.
