In San Francisco, President Xi Jinping of China emphasized a willingness to collaborate and foster friendship with the United States, highlighting ample opportunities for mutual cooperation. Addressing American business leaders during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, Xi aimed to reassure the global business community amidst China’s challenges in attracting foreign investments.

During a gathering with US executives following talks between Xi and President Joe Biden to stabilize relations, Xi received a warm reception with applause upon his arrival and during his speech. He emphasized the necessity for joint efforts between China and the US, criticizing the perception of China as a threat and advocating against a zero-sum approach.

Xi assured that China, regardless of its developmental stage, has no intentions of pursuing dominance, expansion, or imposing its will on others. He disclaimed seeking spheres of influence and declared a stance against engaging in either a cold or hot war.

Expressing sympathy for the American people affected by the fentanyl crisis, Xi highlighted previous agreements between China and the US to limit fentanyl production. The high-security dinner served as an opportunity for companies to directly engage with China’s leader amid concerns about China’s economic slowdown, US initiatives to shift certain supply chains away from China, and uncertainties linked to China’s expanding security regulations.

Approximately 400 attendees, including business figures, government officials, and academics, participated in the event. Among them were prominent executives from major US corporations like Tim Cook from Apple, Laurence Fink from BlackRock, Hock Tan from Broadcom, Ray Dalio from Bridgewater Associates, and Albert Bourla from Pfizer.

The menu for the dinner included a seasonal vegetable salad, choices of coffee crusted black angus flat iron steak or a vegetable curry with squash and rice, a fruit tart, and wine. US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and other American officials were also present at the gathering.
