A Powerfull 6.6 Magnitude Earthquake Struck Off Sumur- Banten, Felt Strongly in Capital

A 6.7 magnitude earthquake shook Sumur, Banten, on Friday (14/01/2022) at 16.05 WIB. The tremor was felt as far as the capital Jakarta.

The Climatology and Geophysics Meteorological Agency (BMKG) reported the quake was at coordinate point 7.01 LS, 105.26 BT.

The earthquake hit 52 km (32 miles) off Banten province at a depth of 10 km, but did not trigger a tsunami warning. The magnitude was initially reported at 6.7 but downgraded to 6.6.

“There is no tsunami potential,” BMKG said.

“Be careful of aftershocks that may occur,” BMKG continued.

Meanwhile, residents living in the capital city of Jakarta panicked, employees in buildings in the capital Jakarta panicked to scatter out of the building.

The earthquake was also felt in west Java, Banten province, and Lampung province.

The Governor of Banten Province, Wahidin Halim through his press release said that the earthquake had at least impacted several damaged houses. “The earthquake caused damage to several houses, schools and mosques.” Wahidin Halim said. (*)
