Indonesian, Greek defense ministers discuss greater cooperation

Jakarta– According to an official announcement received here on Saturday, Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto will meet with Greek Minister of National Defense Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos in Athens, Greece, on March 11, 2022.

They addressed initiatives to increase defense cooperation between the two nations, including defense equipment and cooperative education and training, during the meeting.

Other strategic military topics were also discussed by the ministers.

An honour event for higher grades was held for the Indonesian minister.

In 2015, the two countries started military industrial cooperation with the signing of an agreement between the Greek business Theon Sensors and the Indonesian state-run weapons company PT Pindad (Persero) for the joint manufacturing of night vision rifles (TBSM) in Indonesia.

The collaborative effort sought to maximize the use of Indonesian indigenous goods in the TBSM.

The two companies also worked together to set up an assembly line and sell the product jointly.

The Pindad Optronics Workshop cooperation was announced during the 2016 Indo Defence Expo and Forum.

The collaboration aimed to improve the technology transfer process in order to improve technological use in the local sector.

Meanwhile, Panagiotopoulos stated that his nation intends to deepen bilateral cooperation with Indonesia in the political, economic, and defense sectors, particularly in trade, marine, shipping, R&D, tourism, and industry.

During the discussion, the Indonesian minister also voiced worry over the deterioration of the situation in Ukraine.
