Southwest Maluku Rocked by Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake in early Morning

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 shook Southwest Maluku Regency, Maluku Province, Thursday (12/30/2021) early morning.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) through its official website was monitored on Thursday (12/30/2021) early morning informing the earthquake occurred at 01:25 WIB.

The location of the earthquake was at 7.76 South Latitude -127.66 East Longitude with a depth of 210 kilometers.

The epicenter was at sea 45 kilometers Southwest of Southwest Maluku.

Earthquake tremors are felt up to Tiakur on scale V-VI Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI), Tepa on scale IV-V MMI, Saumlaki on scale IV MMI, Tual in scale III MMI, Raja Ampat on scale II MMI, Sorong City on scale II MMI, Darwin Australia on scale III-IV MMI, Waingapu on scale III-IV MMI, Rote on scale III MMI, and Sabu on a scale of II MMI.

BMKG again informed of the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 in Southwest Maluku on Thursday at 02.21 WIB.

The location of the earthquake was at 7.81 South Latitude–127.69 East Longitude with a depth of 167 kilometers and the epicenter was at 39 kilometers Northwest of Southwest Maluku.

BMKG said the quake did not have the potential for a tsunami. (*)
